Le centre de compétences pour la signalisation ferroviaire urbaine est situé au centre-ville de Toronto. Thales provides world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and interlocking for mass rail transit applications globally. The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)! This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. The Chief Engineering Architect is responsible for the Wayside Zone Control and more generally the wayside product implementation. He/she provides the overall technical direction on the end to end development of the wayside elements for the SELTRAC CBTC product. In addition the Chief Engineering Architect will review and approve major developments on projects that are based on the SELTRAC CBTC product to ensure the developments are consistent with product and other projects functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for guiding the general development of the wayside elements of SELTRAC 3.5

  • The guidance includes the strategy for development, implementation and test for the new functionality developed on the wayside elements SELTRAC 3.5

  • Ensuring proper baselines are selected that maximize reuse between projects and product

  • Ensure solutions adhere to the signaling and safety principles for SELTRAC CBTC Product

  • Drive innovative solutions to comply to the product feature forms produced by the Product Line Architect and the System requirements prepared by the CBTC Architect

  • Ensure product solutions are development in a cost effective manner both on product and for projects that will use the solutions

  • Ensure the development is being progressed per the SELTRAC CBTC Product Process and Plans

  • Arbitrates decisions in case of disagreements of the key stakeholders in the development process

  • Coordinate with the other SELTRAC CBTC Architects to ensure consistency of solutions between the wayside (Zone Control), onboard (VOBC), Central (ATS) and system architects

  • Review and approve the major updates to the subsystem wayside requirements and design

  • Ensure a good communication from product to projects on the development of SELTRAC CBTC wayside elements

  • Ensure the major developments on projects are consistent with the product solutions to the extent possible and the solution developed adhere to the signaling and safety principles for SELTRAC CBTC

  • Ensure critical product issues are communicated to the projects with suggested mitigations in a timely manner including participating in the product/project CCRB

  • Ensure major project solutions are development in a cost effective manner to ensure reuse of solutions from other sources (Product or other projects)

  • Promoting the reuse of the product solution directly on project applications whenever possible

  • Provides technical guidance to the wayside product development team and the project PDA's

  • leading technical discussions, technical solution presentation to internal stakeholders

  • Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives

  • Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount

  • Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects

Required Skills & Experience:

  • University degree in Computer sciences, Engineering or a closely related field

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in development of software-based System applications

  • Involved in the delivery of more than one SelTrac project in some capacity including experience in PDA, System Design, System Integration, and System Acceptance

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of safety standards including CENELEC

  • Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge

  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices

  • Knowledge of the complete development cycle including testing and safety principles

  • Experience in using DOORS, Melody advance, etc.

  • Rail Signaling knowledge is an asset

  • P. Eng license is desirable
