Thales Portugal is looking for a Head of RAMS to join our Safety, Quality & Customer Satisfaction department. Reporting to the Quality & Safety Director, this role is responsible for managing the RAMS department which addresses Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety activities for the Ground Transportation Business within Thales Portugal. You will lead a team that can work closely with multiple disciplines within the organisation, particularly, Engineering, Validation and Testing & Commissioning, including managing performance and competency of the assigned staff. You will ensure that RAMS tasks for bids are undertaken and delivered in accordance with Customers and Thales requirements, including:

  • Definition of the RAMS strategy for the offer in liaison with the Safety Director;

  • Preparation of the RAMS portion of the offer;

  • To lead the production of RAMS estimates at best possible cost taking into consideration the anticipated workload and other RAMS related activities costs (e.g. specific training, ISA works, necessary trips, etc.);

Other responsibilities on a Project/Product include:

  • Appointing RAMS Engineers for the necessary roles and responsibilities for the tasks in the various lifecycle phases of each project/product development

  • To lead the implementation of RAMS management process and performance of the necessary RAMS tasks to be performed

  • To manage resources to be allocated to throughout individual projects lifecycle in different roles/responsibilities with defined independence requirements

  • To perform RAMS tasks and peer review of RAMS tasks as appointed and required for given individual projects

  • Ensuring that RAMS analyses for projects and products are undertaken in accordance with appropriate processes (e.g. CENELEC) and with Customers and Thales requirements

  • Accurately collates work progress reports and perform Estimate to Complete (ETC) for all RAMS work packages

  • Establish and maintain effective communications with other project roles including Customer personnel, as necessary

  • Raising alerts when safety is jeopardised



  • You have relevant experience in Engineering Safety/RAMS/Systems Assurance, ideally with experience within the rail industry;

  • You have experience coordinating/leading others to success;

  • You have demonstrated experience in verification and validation techniques and application of international RAMS railway standards such as IEC 61508, EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129


  • You have detailed knowledge of railway signalling systems assets;

  • You have the ability to work under pressure, to manage responsibilities and to make decisions;

  • You have good knowledge of railway organisational structures and standards, workflows, operating procedures, and terminology;

  • You have the ability to communicate efficiently in Portuguese and English, spoken and written
