About Your Role

Thales has been supporting the Australian Defence Force with Small Arms for over 100 years and is now working to deliver them the Next Generation of Close Combat Family of Weapons integrated with other supporting soldier systems. We have built up a team passionate about developing products to equip soldiers with transformational capabilities for the challenges of the modern battlefield and we’re now looking for like-minded, engineers and technical staff to join us in this important task. The Chief of Army summarised this last year when he recognised this by confirming that what we do is “ fundamental to assuring Army’s competitive capability edge into the future”.

Our Integrated Weapons and Sensor business is currently seeking an experienced R&D Hardware Manager to be based at our Lithgow site. This role will focus on the research and development management of the hardware of disruptive technology to support the next generation of weapon products we will be designing and manufacturing. This is a great opportunity for an experienced technical leader for 2021 to join us in this innovative senior engineering role.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing knowledge on state-of-the-art Weapon Hardware Architecting, taking account of future developments.
  • Elaborating, stabilising and maintaining hardware architecture across the Engineering development life-cycle phases from bid to delivery.
  • Directing and coordinating hardware architecture, modelling, simulation and prototyping studies.
  • Coaching, developing and leading the R&D team
  • Steering technological developments of the selected hardware architecture.
  • Lead the undertaking of design, test, prototyping and product support activities
  • Lead the undertaking mechanical, environmental, thermal, shock & vibration testing
  • Acting in the role of Design Authority

How About You?

  • Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Physics or Materials Science
  • Recent solid experience in technical leadership of a team of engineers in the development, test and qualification of hardware solutions is essential to the success of this role
  • Execution of the Engineering DDQS (Design, Develop & Qualify the Solution) activities for Mechanical Sub-Systems.
  • Strong knowledge of hardware development including mechanical 3D designs.
  • Experience in mechanical stress and thermal analysis using software such as ANSYS.
  • You are able to manage multiple stakeholders
  • You are analytical and a problem solver
  • Eligibility to be chartered for CPEng or discipline equivalent.
  • Any experience in defence engineering projects in particular weapons design and associated ancillaries for soldier systems would be highly desirable
  • Any experience in the integration of sensors, optronics and electronic components into mechanical would also be highly desirable

International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are applicable and as such, your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.
