Stage-/Afstudeeropdracht - WO - Mechanica, Technische Natuurkunde. 3D printed waveguides for radar applications
Full time, Internship / Placement
Assignment: Internship/graduation
Level: Master
Field of study: Mechanics, Applied Physics
Title of the assignment: 3D printed waveguides for radar applications
About us
In the Netherlands, where 2100 employees are based, we are located in four cities: Huizen, Delft, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ). Together with an extensive ecosystem of knowledge partners, customers and suppliers, we work on radars for naval vessels, cyber security solutions, transportation systems, communication equipment for land forces, cryogenic cooling solutions and research & development for radar tech (in collaboration with TU Delft).
Within the RF Engineering department in Hengelo radar front-ends are developed. This includes the design of antennas, transmitters, signal generators and receivers. Besides product development, innovative technology studies are carried out in this field.
About the assignment
Waveguides can transport high levels of RF power with low loss. The goal of this assignment is to investigate the maturity and possibilities of 3D printing as a manufacturing process for waveguides. There are various 3D printing processes for metal as well as polymers like SLM, SLA and SLS. Polymer printed parts can be metal plated in our own factory to get the functionality of a metal waveguide. All in all, there are many possibilities regarding production processes, materials and post treatments for making printed waveguides that determine how they score regarding RF performance, costs and reliability. Using literature study, testing and prototyping we want to gain more insight in these aspects.
Foreseen activities are:
- Literature study regarding important parameters of waveguides (small section)
- Literature study regarding 3D printed waveguides (processes and examples)
- Selection of relevant print processes for this application
- Defining a test plan for investigating performance and reliability
- Test samples for determining optimal settings/parameters
- Case study of a number of printed waveguides
- Processing of measurement data
- Report
Affinity
Affinity and/or experience with Mechanics, testing, manufacturing, production technologies, materials
