Thales Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) UK is a principal supplier of UAS, EW and Radar equipment to the UK armed forces, as well as an exporter of these capabilities world-wide.

ISR are a forward looking business unit that develops cutting edge products such as; Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) which are revolutionising modern warfar, Radars that are capable of detecting foot prints in the grass when someone has walked across a field, Digital Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM) that provides situational awareness and identify threats even in busy Electronic Transmission Environments and Radar Electronic Countermeasures (RECM) that can protect assets by denying tactical advantage and distracting incoming threats.

Thales is seeking to recruit a Software Engineering Manager who will be fully accountable for leading and delivering one of our major software developments within the ISR Business. The Software Engineering Manager role will act in partnership with the Systems Engineering Manager to ensure on time, on cost, quality delivery from the team on R&D, bids and contract execution.

More widely, as part of the ISR Software Engineering Leadership Team, the Software Engineering Manager will have the opportunity to help develop the ISR Software Capability supporting the Head of Software. Strong engineering leadership is therefore an essential ingredient in this role and ability to manage key stakeholders within the engineering and wider product/project team.

Role Definition:

  • Provide Software Engineering Leadership and Management to one of ISR’s software developments.
  • Responsible for programme work packages / tasks and to support of Cost Centre.
  • To originate, specify and prove designs to meet project operational requirements.
  • Create a learning culture within the team to enable continually improving individual and collective performance.
  • Ensure adequate forward planning is performed for project activities and to capture the output in the relevant development plan.
  • Provide independent governance support to activities outside of your own portfolio.
  • To ensure the product is delivered on time and to budget.
  • To identify and pro-actively manage project risks and ensure that risks are assessed and reported to project on a regular basis.
  • To ensure that project safety and airworthiness requirements are addressed in a manner consistent with company processes

We are looking for

A successful Software Engineering Leader with Management competence. Ideally experience in the Defence sector but not essential. You will have demonstrable knowledge of current SDLC practices required, especially Agile development and a sound commercial awareness and ability to balance technical with commercial needs.

You will have a demonstrable ability to anticipate risks, identify delivery issues early, and mitigate through pro-active recovery plans to avoid cost/schedule/quality impacts.

In line with Thales' Baseline Security requirements, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment and/or education history for up to three years. Some vacancies may require full Security Clearance which can require further evidence to be provided.
