Job ID: R0109615 Location: Crawley, England, United Kingdom
Regular Employment, Full time
Location: Crawley, United Kingdom

Thales people architect solutions that enable two-thirds of planes to take off and land safely. We create in-flight entertainment systems that engross 50 million fliers every year and we develop the avionics that control the world’s largest commercial aircrafts. Our simulators train the next generation of pilots for fighter jets, transporters and search and rescue helicopters. And, together, each and every member of our aerospace team makes a difference.

Together we offer fantastic opportunities for committed employees to learn and develop their career with us. At Thales UK, we research, develop, and supply technology and services that impact the lives of millions of people each day to make life better, and keep us safer. We innovate across five major industries; Aerospace, Defence, Ground Transportation, Security and Space. Your health and well-being matters to us and that’s why we offer you the flexibility to do what’s important to you; whether that’s part time hours, job sharing, home working, or the ability to flex your start and finish times. Where possible, we support a working pattern that suits your lifestyle and helps you reach your ambitions.

In a world where flexibility and security are essential, Thales offer seamless, cyber-secure and affordable connectivity for our customers’ end-to-end services, no matter what the platform: from drones & helicopters to business jets & air transport.
Thales FlytLink products give aircraft the capability to utilise the Iridium satellite network to provide based voice and data communication services, from pilots liaising with Air Traffic Control, right through to passengers streaming live sport and the latest movies. FLX UK are looking to establish a high performing team to complete the development of the FlytLINK Iridium satellite communication product.

The project aim is to deliver a robust aviation Iridium Product Line suitable for the Air Transport and adjacent markets which leverage the benefits of the Iridium Certus Network. This will enable the delivery of a high performing L-Band Satcom datalink that will accelerate the delivery of digital services for cockpit applications by accessing new ATM services, on-board systems IoT connectivity and accelerate the use of digital data for autonomous air vehicles.

The intent is to develop the key technology building blocks in the areas of security architecture, communication avionics industrialisation, datalink voice & data performance, antenna technology and system integration to ensure that the Iridium Certus offering can enable the greater reliance on information to deliver autonomous & sustainable aviation.  The project will critically examine the performance requirements for Iridium Certus datalink and the requirement for a multi-domain architecture.  A key challenge remains to achieve a small footprint High Gain Antenna to achieve the full data rate potential for the Iridium Certus offering. In order to provide wide access to the latest datalink technology a key objective will be the industrial product design to enable a low cost, but complex set of products.  This is key as the speed of technology change requires the product line to evolve as the technology matures and the product is applied to different market segments.  With the SWaP benefits  operating over a LEO network, the project will develop a number of Proof of Concepts to demonstrate the performance of the datalink and the benefits to the aviation applications (connected avionics, HUMs, tracking etc) over a variety of market segments.  The project will culminate in certification of related products for roll out to Industry.

In a world where flexibility and security are essential, Thales offer seamless, cyber-secure and affordable connectivity for our customers’ end-to-end services, no matter what the platform: from drones & helicopters to business jets & air transport.
