Thales UK have an exciting opportunity for an motivated and talented Software Engineer to work within Defence Mission Systems (DMS), specifically our Maritime Mission Systems (MMS) business unit; a team dedicated to working on some of the next generation, cutting edge sonar technologies for surface ships and submarines. Over recent years, Maritime Mission Systems has successfully positioned itself in growth markets and has doubled in size over the past ten years; to continue to deliver and continue growth.

About the role:

This role provides a unique opportunity for you to create software that delivers a state-of-the-art Sonar capability for the Royal Navy, and other international partners. You will be a key member of the Maritime Mission Systems software team based at our Cheadle Site; a forward thinking and growing team with excellent prospects for further development and progressions, as well as gaining exposure to new tools, helping us to leverage open-source tools in bespoke sonar solutions. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with Thales sites in the UK, France and Australia.

Duties will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Define our solution by working with Systems Engineering to develop requirements and a test strategy
  • Develop our systems by working as a key member of a project team to deliver a high quality, robust software deliverable that meets customer requirements, on time and within budget
  • Support our systems by working with customer support functions to ensure that currently deployed software products are maintained on both land and at sea
  • Build our strategy by working with the software management function to ensure that skills, technology and ways of working are developed
  • Creation, development and support of new and existing digital platforms for sonar applications.
  • Design and implementation of middleware products, based on an open publish-subscribe architecture
  • Development of secure, fault-tolerant and maintainable operating system deployments in a disconnected environment.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

We are committed to hiring individuals with a “can do” and positive attitude with willingness to learn and improve on skills and knowledge. We are looking for an individual with a good foundation in computer science and software development, along with ideally the following skills and attributes:

  • Significant experience of an ‘implementation’ language, such as Java, C++, Python
  • Experience of Linux and containerisation
  • Awareness of working with high-speed data processing
  • Awareness of a containerisation ecosystem, such as Docker, Kubernetes, Openshift, Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana
  • Experience working real time with appreciation of constraints in software development
  • Proficient programming skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player with “can do” attitude

This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held; if not currently held it is expected that the post holder will undergo SC Clearance, please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.

In line with Thales' Baseline Security requirements, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment and/or education history for up to three years.
