What you’ll be doing

Thales Maritime Mission Systems provide a unique opportunity for you to create software that delivers state of the art capabilities for both UK and International Navies. Our systems are developed for a wide range of significant defence projects; including the Astute class submarines, Merlin helicopters, Type 23 frigates, the Hunt class mine countermeasures vessel, and many more. As a Thales Maritime Mission Systems software engineering apprentice, you will also help to develop the next-generation of Sonar technologies, for which we are world-renowned. You will be a key member of the Software Development team based at the Thales site in Manchester.

Key responsibilities

  • Define our solution by working with Systems Engineering to develop requirements and a test strategy.
  • Develop our systems by working as a key member of a project team to deliver a high quality, robust software deliverable that meets customer requirements, on time and within budget.
  • Support our systems by working with customer support functions to ensure that currently deployed software products are maintained on both land and at sea.
  • Build our strategy by working with the software management function to ensure that skills, technology and ways of working are developed.
The Programme

Through our Level 3 apprenticeship you’ll be making the most of your talents, getting to understand engineering from the ground up; and doing so with the help of one of the biggest and best names in the industry.

As a software apprentice you will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in engineering. For the duration of this 3-4 year programme you will be given one day per week in which to complete your studies with a local college. For the other 4 days you will be working in the business, applying your learning and gaining a breadth of experience across the industry. At the end of the programme you will move into a permanent role within the engineering function.

This opportunity is in Cheadle, working within the defence business.

Who we’re looking for
We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are motivated, committed and keen to learn. A self-starter who is able to manage their time, show initiative and has a genuine interest in software and Thales. Successful candidates will show self-discipline and an aspiration to build a career within the engineering function.

You will also need
  • 5 GCSEs grade A-C including English and Maths
  • Right to Work in the UK for the duration of the 3 year programme
  • Please note that applicants who hold a relevant HNC, HND or degree will not be eligible for this programme.
